Exceptional 46/5 miniatures Third and last part

The first part of three articles about exceptional 46 / 5 miniatures contains a composition where both Andreas Kuyken and I contributed parts. The second article is dedicated to a composition of Andreas. This third article presents and explains a 46 / 5 miniature made by me more than one year ago.

First of all I explain the first few moves because for understanding the solution it is good to know why the first moves of the main variant are the best way to play for both colours. I give a few variants in order to come to a conclusion.

- 12-7 (6-11) 7 x 16 (23 of 24-29?) 40-35! (34) 44-39, 38 x 49 w+
- 12-7 (6-11) 7 x 16 (25-30!) 40-35? (23-28!) 32 x 23 (31-36) 41-37 (30-34)16-11 (34-40) 44-39 (40-45) 11-7 (45-50) 39-34 (24-29) 34-30 (29 x 18) =.
- 12-7 (6-11) 7 x 16 (25-30!) 41-36? (24-29, 13-18) 40-35 (29-34, 23-29, 34-39) =.

Conclusion: After (25-30) White can never play 40-35 and cannot prevent (30-34) later on. In other words the first part of the solution is:

12-7 (6-11) 7 x 16 (25-30) 16-11 (24-29) 11-7

From 11-7 on Black has four relevant ways of trying to reach a draw. The first of them is presented by the Applet below. It is not the best defence, though White needs a lot of moves to win, because White can win in several different ways. However, it is worth playing the Applet because White chooses the opportunity to reach a very spectacular final with two Black Kings!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W12,32,38,40,41,42,44:B6,13,14,23,24,25,31."] 1. 12-7 6-11 2. 7x16 25-30 3. 16-11 24-29 4. 11-7 31-36 5. 41-37 30-34 6. 40-35 34-40 7. 7-2 40x49 8. 2x28 29-34 9. 28x5 49-44 10. 5-23 34-39 11. 23-5 44-50 12. 37-31 36x27 13. 32x21 39-44 14. 5-28 44-49 15. 38-33 49x16 16. 42-38 16x49 17. 28-6 50x17 18. 6x44 49x40 19. 35x44

The next Applets with the other variants start with 11-7. The second attempt of Black to reach a draw does not give White much choice how to win. Special attention please for 1 x 9!!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,32,38,40,41,42,44:B13,14,23,29,30,31."] 1. 11-7 31-36 2. 41-37 13-18 3. 7-1 29-33 4. 38x29 23x45 5. 1x9 45-50 6. 9-4 50x47 7. 4-15 36-41 8. 37x46 47-36 9. 15-4 36-47 10. 46-41 47x36 11. 32-27

The third attempt by Black not only gives White only one way to win, 42-37!!, but also ends by a big stroke over 5 pieces that is quite unusual in end games. In a silly dream I executed this combination. My opponent took the piece at 41, said that I did not need it and then gave up!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,32,38,40,41,42,44:B13,14,23,29,30,31."] 1. 11-7 13-18 2. 42-37 31x33 3. 7-2 30-34 4. 2-16 34x45 5. 44-39 33x44 6. 32-28 23x32 7. 16x50

We arrive now at the main variant. It is the most logical way to play for Black, (30-34) directly. It looks easy for White, but that is not the case.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,32,38,40,41,42,44:B13,14,23,29,30,31."] 1. 11-7 30-34 2. 7-1 34x45 3. 44-40 45x34 4. 1-6 31-37 5. 42x31 34-40 6. 6-50 40-45 7. 31-26 29-34 8. 26-21 34-40 9. 41-37 23-28 10. 50x20 45-50

A real surprise, it is impossible to win this variant! However, as in the previous variant White has a secret weapon: 42-37!! The last Applet gives the full solution of this remarkable miniature.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W12,32,38,40,41,42,44:B6,13,14,23,24,25,31."] 1. 12-7 6-11 2. 7x16 25-30 3. 16-11 24-29 4. 11-7 30-34 5. 42-37 31x33 6. 7-2 34x45 7. 2x39 45-50 8. 39-34

When we think of 46/5, we think of Jan Pennings. How nice would it have been if we could have shown these miniatures to him! Probably he would have made a limerick right away!

"Jan Pennings collected all his life.
All he could find on 46 / 5.
Unfortunately Jan is no longer with us.
He is honoured here by Kuyken and Bus"

Exceptional 46/5 miniatures Part 2 (of three)

The first part of the 46/5 exceptional miniatures articles presented a composition that was a result of cooperation between Andreas Kuyken and me. This second article is dedicated to a splendid composition of Andreas.

Starting with the very satisfactory initial position it is very clear that after 30-25, Black does not have any other change than (36-41). Even that looks rather hopeless for Black, because after 25 x 3 (41-47) 42-38 (47 x 15 or 29) 22-18, 3 x 1 Black does not have any chance to survive. See the first Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,28,30,32,37,42:B7,8,9,12,20,36."] 1. 30-25 36-41 2. 25x3 41-47 3. 42-38 47x29 4. 22-18 12x23 5. 3x1

It is also clear that so far there is nothing that deserves the classification excellent. However, the real surprises are still to come! Black has a very remarkable, brilliantly found, defense by playing (12-17!!) and (41-47!).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,28,30,32,37,42:B7,8,9,12,20,36."] 1. 30-25 36-41 2. 25x3 12-17 3. 22x13 41-47

This the highlight of the composition. It is 6 to 1. White has only two ways to keep 4 pieces of which 3-9 ( 47 x 3) is without any doubt a draw. This means that White has to play 13-8. The difference is that after (47 x 2) White is winning by 28-22 (2-16) 22-17, 37-32. However, Black has a better one : (47 x 16!). The climax is shown by the next Applet containing the full main variant.

Daarvan is 3-9 (47 x 3) zonder twijfel remise.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,28,30,32,37,42:B7,8,9,12,20,36."] 1. 30-25 36-41 2. 25x3 12-17 3. 22x13 41-47 4. 13-8 47x16 5. 28-23 16-2 6. 3-14

As encore I present a miniature of Jan van Tol. His name is a guarantee for something special. This miniature is not of the Champions League level as the main miniatures of the three articles. But also this one of Jan van Tol contains a very special moment.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W18,28,29,33,37,43,44:B2,7,8,10,14,30,32."] 1. 18-12 32x34 2. 12x1 2-7 3. 1x25 34-39 4. 43x34 30x50 5. 25-14 50x46 6. 14x5

Do you see why White should not take 1 x 20?

Zie je waarom 1 x 20 slaan fout is?
